Experiment with pattern in a fun playful way!

This 7-lesson free course is all about play, curiosity, and discovery. You’ll experiment with pattern, colour, and shape to create bold and inventive ideas, while also starting to think about how designs can be applied to real products.

You’ll be working with a playful set of limited materials: circle & square stickers, postcards, coloured paper, scissors, and marker pens. These simple tools are the building blocks for big, creative outcomes.

There’s also a gentle introduction to Adobe Illustrator, where you’ll learn how to turn one of your ideas into a simple repeating pattern. It’s a basic lesson designed to show you just how easily your playful experiments can start to become digital designs.

Remember: this is not about “getting it perfect.” It’s about testing, playing, and seeing what happens when you layer, cut, stick, and arrange. Let’s see how far a simple sticker can take us!

Hi, I'm Jules

For over 20 years I've helped textile design students and aspiring designers build creative confidence and discover their own unique style.

I created this free course because I believe great pattern design doesn't begin with perfection – it begins with curiosity, play and a willingness to experiment.

I love working with materials that create instant, playful patterns. Exploring ideas physically with stickers has influenced my digital practice, encouraging me to push my creative boundaries.

I've taught this workshop to a wide range of ages and experience levels, with each group producing original, colourful outcomes that often become the starting point for exciting new creative directions.

I can't wait to welcome you into the course.

Created by Jules McKeown

For over 20 years Jules has taught the next generation of textile designers.

One thing she's learnt is that the strongest designers aren't the ones with the most ideas. They're the ones who know how to develop a single idea with depth and intention.

That's the teaching philosophy behind One Motif.

Rather than encouraging students to chase endless new ideas, Jules teaches them how to explore one idea more deeply – because that's where the most original work begins.

Inside One Motif, that same teaching approach has been carefully adapted into an online course, giving you a structured creative process you can return to long after the lessons are over.

And because creative growth doesn't happen in isolation, you'll also become part of the Pattern Social Studio Community – a welcoming space to share your work, ask questions, receive feedback and continue growing alongside other designers.

Ellie Green

"Jules has taught me so many valuable, practical skills that I still use every day as a designer. Her ability to break down complex techniques into simple, creative exercises helped me explore a range of design styles I never thought I could master.

Through her supportive and encouraging approach, I discovered new ways to express myself, build my design confidence, and develop a personal style. Every class was upbeat, fun, and full of inspiration — learning felt natural and exciting. Jules doesn’t just teach techniques; she ignites a passion for creative discovery that stays with you long after the lessons end."

Charlotte Daw

"Jules is a wonderful educator. She taught me all the key hands on and digital skills from drawing, repeat pattern to Photoshop and Illustrator that I needed to become a professional print designer.

She encouraged and supported me to pursue my dream of working as a designer in New York (which I did!)

I am now a Senior Print Designer working for a large British brand in London."
